Vardhaman Cup: Minor Flutter in the Second and Third Round

Vardhaman Cup FIDE Rated Open 2017

At the end of three rounds, ten players are leading the tournament with the perfect score. The second and the third rounds of the Vardhaman Cup FIDE Rating Chess Tournament witnessed minor flutters on the top tables.

Spencer Masango of Zimbabwe

In the second round, Hyderabadi youngster Sai Varshith Chilukuri, rated 1672, managed to hold the competition’s second seed Spencer Masango of Zimbabwe, who is rated 2253. Experienced FIDE Master J. Ramakrishna, rated 2149, was beaten with the black pieces by Andhra boy Krishna Karthik N., rated 1649.

B. Sekar

In the third round, it was the turn of the top seed to be surprised. B. Sekar, rated 2274, played the black pieces and attacked Andhra Pradesh’s Ajay Mushini, rated 1770, in a Sicilain Defence game. Just when it seemed like he would coast to yet another victory, Sekar fumbled and the game was drawn.

Play in the City of Nizams!

Did you know that Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam who ruled Hyderabad between 1886-1967, was the richest man in the world?

He had an estimated net worth of $230 billion. Which made him the Richest Man on the planet!

Hyderabad has a rich cultural heritage. The land of Nizams is alive and ever changing with the modern times. It has emerged into two dynamic divisions—the old and new. The old city consists of ever charming Charminar, Golconda Fort (a former diamond-trading center and once home to the world famous Koh-i-Noor diamond) Hussain Sagar lake. The “new city’ represents the Tech establishments.  Software giants such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft and hundreds of MNCs are nestled on the new side of Hyderabad.

The City also has a bright chess scene. It’s the home of India’s number 2  Grandmaster Harikrishna Pentala and Golden girl of Indian Chess GM Dronavalli Harika.
